Win Yi Ng is an artist-in-residence with the 2026 Spring International Artist-in-Residence Project at Sixi Museum. As a Chinese-Malaysian artist, her artistic practice explores personal memory, family lineage, and national identity. Influenced by her upbringing in a multilingual and multicultural environment, she focuses on the historical contexts of colonialism and migration, intertwining cultural symbols and historical narratives through painting and mixed-media sculpture.
During her residency in Nanjing, Ng researches urban experiences and historical symbols, integrating them into her own practice. This video captures the artist’s unique perspective and the traces of her daily life during her residency: from the massive Chinese character signboards and subway signs on the streets to everyday verbal communication, these "familiar yet foreign" linguistic experiences prompt her to reflect on the subtle distance between herself and her identity. Documenting her daily trajectory around the studio and her visits to cultural landmarks across Nanjing, she translates the imagery of "sons of the dragon" from roof ridges of ancient architecture, pottery figurines, and plaque calligraphy from museums, into creative elements. Furthermore, she leverages the convenience of online shopping to source special materials, reactivating forgotten childhood memories.
