Event Review | Film Screening & Post-screening Discussion
On 11–12 April, Sixi Museum, in collaboration with Beiwei Story , organised a screening of A Journey in Spring followed by a post-screening discussion with the two directors.
In the film, the delicate bond between Qinfu and his wife unfolds quietly—bittersweet, stubborn, and rooted in authentic everyday scenes. Like seeds pushing through moist soil, their story is calm and unyielding, yet full of life. The raw texture of Super 16mm film captures the true grain of life, while its nonlinear narrative sparks imagination, reflecting the unique journey of each viewer. This visual restraint and poetic dissonance echo the theme ofSixi’s exhibition Seeds Out of Line: beyond order, we honour the untamed, unscripted power of art.
During the live Q&A with the directors, Wang Pingwen and Peng Tzu-Hui shared the background of the film and the moments of creative understanding they reached while working together. Fascinated by the subject of time, they drew inspiration from real experiences, as their parents aging, shifts in their own identities, along with the wove in social news events to construct a narrative that feels deeply lifelike, complex, and intimate.
At last, in the roundtable discussion, the audience’s perspective expanded from cinematic language to profound reflections on life and death, family, and East Asian identities. One viewer noted that the lingering long shots invited us to gaze upon overlooked moments in daily life, and the artistic treatment of nonlinear time created a state of deep flow. Others shared personal experiences of losing elderly family members, exploring the striking tension between the exuberant vitality of spring and the weight of mortality.
