In Sophie von Hellermann’s studio in Margate, UK, an artistic conversation unfolded between her and Zheng Shu, who is the curator of Sixi Museum.
Unfurling her canvas, von Hellermann wielded her brush with a calligraphic rhythm, her body moving in tandem with the surface of the work. She immersed herself in the persona of Marco Polo, as if sailing the ancient route that carried Europe into the Eastern world.
From memories filtered through layers of translation, von Hellermann gathered fragments where misunderstanding and comprehension intertwine, namely the Silk Road, the thundering gallop of white horses, the silken threads spun by silkworms in the mulberry trees.
Narrative takes root in the gaps of misinterpretation, blooming into a labyrinth woven from colour and thought. This is a cross-century dialogue with Marco Polo, and a journey of spiritual wandering for the artist herself.
Welcome to visit Sixi Museum and step into this fluid realm suspended between memory and imagination.
