Curator in Conversation with Artist | Christian Quin Newell
The Dual Narrative of Paper and Oil Paint
In the duo exhibition The Light Burns the Reality—a surrealist dialogue that transcends East and West—what kind of confusion and perseverance is Christian Quin Newell’s "hero" going through?
In this episode, our curator ZHENG SHU will guide us into Newell’s world: we’ll see how he draws inspiration from diverse cultural influences, including Japanese anime, ancient Egyptian art, and Buddhist philosophy. We will also explore how he uses "internal light sources" and rough matte textures to construct dreamscapes rich with narrative; and how he harnesses the unique qualities of small-scale paper works and large-scale canvas pieces to manipulate the flow of energy between these two mediums.
