Event Review
On February 7, German artist Oscar Lebeck (resident at Sixi Museum) guided the audience into a perception of history, memory and representation, based on his on-site explorations in Nanjing and Guangzhou.
During his residency, Lebeck was invited by Sun Yat-sen University to embark on a journey to trace the old Guangzhou addresses immortalized in his family photo albums. He juxtaposed and layered historical imagery from the albums with contemporary street photographs captured on his visits, crafting evocative collages that weave together the past and the present into a seamless narrative.
Upon his return to Nanjing, Lebeck delved into The Diaries of John Rabe, expanding his research to the German communities in Nanjing, Shanghai, and beyond, as he sought to unearth their choices and traces amid a pivotal historical era.
At the threshold of the old and new year, Lebeck shared his creative process and introspections with quiet eloquence, inviting the audience to immerse themselves in his monochromatic imagery. In this space where joy intertwined with contemplation, guests engaged in heartfelt dialogue with Lebeck about light and shadow artistry, forging a cherished collective memory — one that honors history and invites self-reflection.
