Painting with the Light

Photography Experimental Workshop

Photography is often seen as capturing a slice of time, yet on January 25, under the guidance of SIXI Artist-in-Residence Oscar Lebeck, we did something opposite-we layered time and left proof of existence in the void with light.

The most fascinating aspect of light painting lies in the creator’s momentary "blindness". When working in the dark, waving a light source in hand, there are no visible traces before their eyes. Every composition is shaped purely by the mind’s imagination and the body’s muscle memory. Lebeck traced the origin and evolution of light painting through the works of artistic pioneers and broke down the technical logic behind this art form with live demonstrations and detailed explanations.

Different light sources give rise to distinctly unique artistic languages. Existing around the museum, elevators, and doors serve as the symbols of spatial transition per se. Simultaneously, the trailing streaks of light wands paired with the intermittent strobing of flashlights further shatter the solidity of reality, creating a strikingly sci-fi visual illusion of time and space travel.

The discussions during the workshop extended far beyond photography itself. Either the same staircase and door can take on vastly different appearances from different perspectives. These are the moments we cherish most, when the inertia of everyday seeing can be eliminated, reminding us that reality can be redefined at any time.
