Event Review
On 31st August, Sixi Museum, in collaboration with Coil Sprite - a Shanghai-based independent musician - held a sound workshop.
The event started with a 25-minute ambient music piece composed by Coil Sprite based on the nature theme of the exhibition A Poem Lovely as a Tree. During the performance, bird whistles, wind-bell chimes, flute tones and vocal recitations were played live along with fish leaping, water gurgling and wind sounds, all together composing a lively and ebullient nature narrative.
Afterwards, the audience participated in the performance by touching the interactive installation People Should Listen to the Birds’ Flight by artist QianQian. Guided by the musician, the audience also strummed various small instruments that create sounds, such as the kalimba, wind chimes, rain sticks, fruit kernel rattles, etc., to feel the originality and vitality of the native acoustic instruments, and to record the musical moments that touched their hearts.
At the end, the participants expressed their thoughts and impressions. Each recorded piece was shared and listened, it may be the sound of the wind blowing, or whistling and vocal recitation, or the murmur of nature.
Immersed in the synthesised sounds of electronics and nature, one seemed to be standing in a spring valley, or in a Tibetan monastery deep in the snowy mountains, and briefly escaped from the hustle and bustle of industrial urban life, finding inner peace in nature and uttering admirations for beauty.
