Event Review
Soil - the origin and end of life, as well as a recorder of humanities and society. In its various colours and forms, soil tells the story of the geography, humanity and history. On 22 June, Simon Linington - Artist-in-Residence at Sixi Museum, held a workshop, in which the audience had the chance to touch and feel the texture of the soil of various colours, and to transform this experience into artistic practice.
In the workshop, the artist began by telling his personal inspiration and approach to using soil as a creative medium. During his residency in Nanjing, he searched for and collected stones of various colours from natural landscapes and industrial wastelands, which he smashed into powder and eventually used in his installation arts. The audience were asked to select various colours of soil based on their preferences, which were then filled layer by layer and compacted into glass tubes.
In the discussion after the installation experiments, the audience shared their perceptions of the material and nature. With a small glass tube, the workshop hopes to draw attention to the spiritual experience given by nature, and to reflect on the question of impacts and damages of human urbanisation on the ecological environment.
