An exhausted figure rendered in almost indistinguishable shades of black emerges from crumpled bed sheets in Black in February(2023). With this painting, Simmons meditates on the surplus of attention he received during Black History Month. The ambiguity of the composition and presence of the figure echo the sentiment of needing to be seen and felt in person.
