Francis Upritchard is a New Zealand contemporary artist based in London.
Francis Upritchard was born in New Plymouth, New Zealand in 1976. Her artistic practice involves a wide range of mediums, drawing inspiration from a wealth of cultural materials such as archaeological relics, ancient cultural artefacts, science fiction and much more. Her sculptures usually carry the aura of a “cultural relic” and create a fictional history in imaginative and bizarre forms. The artefacts of modern civilization are transformed into the ritual implements of ancient tribes. Through the scale and display of her work, Upritchard interrogates hegemony, hierarchy and order in contemporary society with absurd characters and stories. Along the way, she asks: does the scale always matter? Are human beings really the rulers? Must bronze be superior to rubber?
