Stefania Batoeva Bulgarian, b. 1981

Stefania Batoeva was born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1981. She studied sculpture at The Royal College of Art and is now based in London, UK. With oil painting as her main medium, Batoeva takes as her creative inspiration a longstanding interest in diverse subcultures, music, literature, psychoanalysis and philosophy. Her paintings hover between abstraction and figuration, jumping constantly between the realms of rationality and sensibility.

Batoeva adopts a swift and radical painting technique, in which geometric colors and unrestrained lines wrestle with each other on a two-dimensional plane, constructing a paradoxical pictorial space. There is no way to accurately tell the experience of the ghostly figures in the painting, nor can one discern the exact story of the plot, but an atmosphere of melancholy and tension is powerfully conveyed.
