Sun Manon was born in 1996 in Paris, France, and came from an artistic family. She herself was from Central Academy of Fine Arts with a MA degree in oil painting. Manon showed a keen interest since she was a child. By then, she tended to graffiti on the walls. Manon felt a sense of delight when creating these simple graffiti. The seeds of inspiration have been sowed her creation of her children’s series, owing to the convenience of painting anytime and anywhere.
Manon’s artworks are mostly involved with children and are depicted by graffiti. A kind of ‘child-like creative liberty’ is adopted to represent children’s spontaneous emotions. Manon is fond of children’s themes since they are free to express their innermost feelings without external constraints by the social framework, whether pleasant or sorrowful. Her artworks represent indomitable courage and freedom by observing the distinctive emotions and implications under their body language.
In addition, Manon tends to apply a unique way of waiting rather than following old generations’ traditions. In order to encourage audiences to have free and independent thoughts compared to traditional exhibitions, Manon attempts to employ alternative mediums instead of common canvas. Inspirations once sparkled Manon when she did a craft activity with children. It occurred to her that the transparent PVC tablecloths on kids’ bags might be the perfect material for paintings. These materials are easy to carry and scrub with high flexibility. Her artworks Les mômes series were created by them, as she laid a long length of PVC tablecloth on the floor and painted on it with acrylic. The defect that acrylic paint is hard to be long-term preserved and easy to peel off after a certain period time, she regards it as ‘marks of the passing childhood.’
